35 week appt. and then some

so this week my friend lauren and i scheduled prenatal massages... we didn't quite know what to expect, but ended up being very pleasantly surprised. i went first and the masseuse's name was udo. if germany had sumo wrestlers, he would be one. he was massive and if you just picture shrek as a german, you pretty much have a visual. i was intimidated, but just started chatting him up so he didn't try anything crazy. he was awesome....very friendly and talented. if time and baby allows i may have to sneak another one of these in before llamalips joins us and life is no longer how we know it. :)

today i (yes i, brant couldn't make it) went to my 35 week visit with doctor locher. they did all the standard tests, 30 mins. of fetal monitoring (the baby was punching the monitor again...so for half an hour the room sounded like the soft lull of its heartbeat accompanied by karate chops every few minutes), and an ultrasound. baby is still head down as it's been the whole pregnancy. photos of the sleeping one:

also this week we've been receiving an influx of gifts for this kid! i'm afraid it's already spoiled! it's exciting to get all this help in setting up the nursery and getting some baby essentials so we feel a little bit more ready. i must say brant and i set up a mat the other night that has toys and a mirror dangling from it (i don't know what the word for it is in baby gear land) and we just sat there and stared at it for about ten minutes afterwards....um yeah, the fact that we're going to be using this soon is really weird. ;) our house is just full of all these gifts....and i want to thank everyone a thousand times over. being so far away, we still feel very loved. :)

brant and i both start grad school this month. brant starts next week and i start in two weeks. my program was supposed to be covered by a military program (for up to $6000) and we just found out that after this class, they've cut the funding. soooo, we'll be paying out of pocket for the program. thankfully it's a part-time program spanning two years, so it's just one class at a time unless i choose to increase it to two. brant's program is fully covered though, so that's a bonus.

we plan to go to luxembourg this saturday night for a getaway and then to belgium to the flea market on sunday. hopefully we'll get lucky and come home with some hot euro finds.

i am taking a photography class this week and learning a lot about my new camera. i'll be taking pregnancy photos of a friend next week utilizing my new skills...

my car made it to germany and is sitting at port. we hope to get it delivered here in a week or two. finally!

brant is LOVING his job here. he flies a lot and has no stress whatsoever which is a massive change from life in vegas. he loves teaching the other pilots although he admits that it is hard work at times. he gives props to the teaching profession daily for how draining it can be....yet unbelievably rewarding.

all for now,
love,

34 weeks

34 weeks (last week) and i've been in a competition with myself to eat as many pastries as possible before i no longer have an excuse. here i am in front of my second favorite bakery in our town:

i know i have no experience and don't know what to expect in a pregnancy, but i still believe that this baby is the most mobile baby EVER. just for kicks (ha!) i tried what they call "kick counting". i guess the point is to make sure your baby moves at least 10 times every 2 hours. this one moved 10 times in the first 30 minutes of me counting....and it continues. the movements are sweeping and large and body chilling at times. now i know this most likely doesn't coordinate with how she/he will be after birth, but if it in some way does, we are in serious trouble. i do know that brant and i were both pretty amazing sleepers as babies, so hopefully that will carry over?! :) we tried to capture some of the kicks and prods, but it didn't quite work out. so here's just a picture of my big belly:

and lastly, brant thinks that it'll be cool to have a picture of me by this sign now and then a picture of me by the leaving orenhofen sign when we move in three years....with an almost three year old! so here's the first installment: :)

tschuss!

first OB appt. in Germany

so we're a bit over 33 weeks pregnant now....and haven't been to the doctor in over five weeks when we should be going every two. needless to say, this appt. was a little overdue. :) like i said before, the hospital is freakish from the outside and it was no different this time. i wanted to take a picture of all the old codgers sitting around the "no smoking" sign in their wheelchairs smoking about one foot from the hospital entrance. classic. my friend lauren told me that she saw someone IN the lobby smoking when she came for an appointment. hilarious!!!!!!! anyway, all is well says doctor locher! the baby's heartbeat is regular and hovering around 145. we were hooked up to the fetal monitoring device for 30 minutes and while it was attached to my belly the baby was pushing at it. i think it sensed an invasion of its privacy. the doctor showed us all four chambers of the heart, the kidneys, liver, stomach, spine, and even ventured down to the nether regions to show us the bladder....but thankfully we didn't catch a glimpse of anything else, if you know what i mean. the baby is about 4.4 lbs. (an estimate of course) and we got some new 3d/4d pictures of it sleeping peacefully with its hands curled up by its face. i'll post those later. we have to go in every two weeks now, so we have three more appointments like that, and then we come in every other day! it's so near - we need to get our shit together, that's for sure.

here are two other favorite photos we took in belgium that i forgot to post earlier:

move to germany, 32 weeks pregnant with a wild one, 5th anniversary in brugge, hospital tour, and birthing class

we made it to germany! it is gorgeous...actually breathtaking - especially coming from las vegas. :) the hills are definitely alive and i've never seen happier grass-eating cows roaming free on bright green pastures. our house is beautiful and this is the view from our patio:

here's a photo of our surrounding area:

i feel as though we live in a children's storybook. it actually reminds me of the photos that they'd show of germany in your social studies book in middle school and you would think....man, like it's really like that...they need to update their textbooks. well, it's really like that. at least in rural germany... :) living here makes me understand the older residents of frankenmuth (my hometown) much more. in fact, i feel like i am living in a much smaller version of frankenmuth. orenhofen has two bakeries (i, of course, have been to both already), a meat store, and a pub that sometimes serves food. the bakeries are adorable and brant and i befriended one of the ladies when we stopped in for an anniversary morning pastry. she was tickled that we tried to speak german to her. the chocolate filled fluffy pasty is our new fave and we'll definitely be seeing her often.

we got our shipment of stuff from korea and unpacked for about a week. it was tiring, hot, and overwhelming. i've been sweating constantly for two weeks. it's actually just cooling off a bit this week and i'm fine, but being hot while unpacking, sorting, and setting up is not fun. especially since our house is three levels!

we visited a craft fair in the oldest city in germany, trier, over the 4th of july. it was super hot walking around, but we cooled off in a beer tent with some bratwurst, fries with mayo, and drinks. trier is really close and has a lot going on...not to mention they have an h&m. :) here's a pic of the town square:

we spent our fifth anniversary by taking a tour of the hospital where we'll deliver....st. elizabeth krankenhaus wittlich. it was scary walking in at first because it looked like a mental hospital - drab, dilapidated, freaky people milling around.... but when we met our "patient liaison" and ventured up to the ob/labor and delivery/postpartum area everything changed. the whole ob experience is "mother-centered". their goal is to make your experience as much like a home birth as possible. they ask you what you want and make sure they do whatever they can to help you. for appointments, you always see the head doctor (who speaks perfect english) for the appointment. midwives will deliver your baby unless problems arise. the labor and delivery area is so serene. the beds are huge fan shapes and are set up so that your partner or spouse can sit behind you. they have all sorts of apparatuses for you to use to make yourself more comfortable and encourage movement and delivery in whatever way you feel most comfortable. they have birthing balls, a birthing tub, squat bars, and the list goes on.... the postpartum area is where you can stay for as long as you want post-birth. i asked her how long you can stay there, and she said, "oh you leave when you are comfortable...if you want to stay 7 days because you don't feel ready yet, no problem...you choose." i was thinking...wait, is that okay with tricare (our insurance) and she said yes, no problem. not like i'd ever want to stay that long, but it's nice to know that they want you to make all these decisions. brant and i left feeling content with everything and so relieved that this fear of the unknown is now known. we're actually really, really excited now. i couldn't imagine a more perfect place for us to experience the birth of our first baby.

anyway....from there we went to brugge, belgium to celebrate our fifth anniversary. it was amazing. what a beautifully historic and charming belgian city. the cactus fest, their largest music fest, was there at the time. david gray, regina spektor, macy grey, and other hot bands were there. we tried to get last minute tickets, but ran out of time and went to another free outdoor concert instead. it was a hot weekend, but we just loved touring the city. we stayed at a bed and breakfast just north of the market center. the b&b only had three rooms (the most they can have in brugge) so we got quite personalized attention. the owner, paulie, and his partner run the place and it was in a brownstone on a cobblestone street. another couple from scotland was staying there as was a couple from london. we all at breakfast together both mornings in paulie's home which was on the bottom floor. sounds weird, but that was such a highlight. we loved talking to these people and paulie told us all the secrets of what to do and see in brugge. his place was charming, yet modern and he served us the freshest locally-made foods every morning. his b&b is the first in the city to earn the city's "eco-friendly" distinction. that was cool. we came home with belgian chocolates - oh yum - and a trunk full of different belgian beers. here are some photos of us in brugge:

we are now working on a nursery for the wild chinchilla (still constantly moving and large, strong movements that sometimes shake my whole body). we painted and bought some baby furniture from an ikea we found near the french border. on our way to belgium, we found another ikea and stopped and got the crib mattress. so slowly this room is coming together...when it looks more like a bedroom and less like a disaster zone, i'll post photos.

we started a birthing class with an english-speaking midwife at the hospital. it is sort of touchy-feely, but will definitely help us. she's really knowledgeable in pain management techniques and ways to ready yourself now for an easier labor. we have other friends in the class which makes it fun so we all look stupid together.

ok, this is getting insanely long.

love and miss you all,
sara

30 weeks and on vacation!

we finally busted out of las vegas and headed to michigan for two weeks of vacation with our families. brant, my mom, and his mom took some pregnancy photos of me/us while we were there. here are some of them:

28 weeks

brant graduated from his weapons instructor course and we got a 3d/4d ultrasound this week! pictures and video of that to come. the baby was all over the place - sticking out its tongue, sucking its thumb, swallowing, waving, doing sign language (just kidding). :)
